Angst — the name alone tells you this isn't about fun in the classic sense. It's about atmosphere and fear, topics barely discussed in computer adventures back in 1992.

You find yourself in a nocturnal city full of danger, and your only weapon is logic, observation, and the ability to survive. It's a text-graphic survival game where peril lurks around every corner — gangsters, homeless people, unknown perpetrators. You're not a hero or a detective. You're an ordinary person, and the city wants to get you. The goal is simply to make it to safety, gather clues, and avoid confrontations.

Gameplay involves navigating the city, examining objects, and having conversations with characters who aren't all pleasant. The mechanics are straightforward — you click on things, read text, and occasionally have to choose which street to take so you don't anger the wrong people. The controls are hassle-free, animation is minimal, but that very lack of polish makes the game striking. You don't get colorful menus or effects — just text, a few pixels, and the feeling that things could go wrong.

When released, Angst was almost a cinematic experiment. Other adventures from that year relied on punchlines and puzzles; this one builds on tension and atmosphere. It's aged, admittedly — the graphics are primitive, dialogue is brief, the world's logic sometimes limps — but in principle it's still rock solid. It could've used voice acting, better environmental presentation, or more scenes, but the game does exactly what it sets out to do.
