Super Play Action Football

Nintendo published its own American football game for the Super Nintendo in 1992, handing development to Tose. The result carries no league licence and no real players, fielding invented teams named after cities, which was standard practice before the big sports brands came to dominate the category.

The view is top-down, or more precisely tilted just enough that you can see sufficient field to read the defensive formation before the snap. Each down begins with a selection from the playbook; then you take control of a single player and run the play. That alternation between a short tactical decision and a short burst of action is the natural rhythm of the sport, and it works even for players who do not know the rulebook in detail.

Sports games gave the SNES a chance to show its strengths: smooth scrolling, enough sprites on the field, and a clean, legible presentation. Audio is modest, built from short musical cues and crowd effects. Multiplayer support is included, and playing against another person is comfortably the better option, since the computer opponent works from a limited repertoire that starts repeating after a few matches.

Today its main interest is as a snapshot of the moment before licences and real rosters became mandatory in sports gaming. The controls are simple, the pace brisk, and a full match takes a modest amount of time.
