The universe is falling apart and you're the only one who can save it. At least that's what Chaos in Space!, a 2002 game, promises — a title that tries to squeeze itself between arcade action and strategy, but ultimately just hangs somewhere in limbo.
It's a straightforward shooter where you move across the play area, swing at various enemies, and collect whatever drops in your path. The visuals are typically retro — single-color blocks, lines, grimy old DOS aesthetic. The sounds are sparse and a sound card won't surprise or dazzle you. The goal is classic: destroy something, preferably solo and without unnecessary drama.
The controls are straightforward, bordering on primitive. Movement, shooting, wait for the screen edge and repeat. You progress level by level, each one more or less the same variation on the theme: more enemies, slightly different mood. The game isn't hard, but it isn't interesting either. It falls into that category where you'd lose interest in five minutes, and spend another twenty bored out of your mind until you finally close it.
Chaos in Space! is a strange relic from the era when every hobbyist programmer thought that space and simple shooting were the recipe for a hit. They weren't. The game never gained any wider recognition and today it's more of a curiosity for someone who collects everything ever made with DOS in the title.
I'd recommend giving it a try in your browser today only if you're interested in exactly these forgotten and mediocre games. For the average player, there's no reason to bother. It's neither bad enough to be entertainingly broken nor good enough to grab your heart. It's just there, in that gray void.
