It's not a metaphor — you literally shoot at a virus named Vaxine and protect your health. It's like someone said: what about a shooter with an immunological theme? And had it made.

The game takes place in a wonderfully abstract world of the human body — or rather in a digital interpretation of how the basic nineties imagined it. You're some kind of kid or immunological entity that flies across the screen and shoots at your enemies. They come from the left and right edges, are colorful, relatively simple and keep multiplying. The goal is as old as the genre itself: survive as long as possible to reach a higher score.

The mechanics are straightforward — movement up and down, shooting, speed. No special elements, no power-ups that would fundamentally change the game. Vaxine sticks to it very conservatively, practically boringly. The game doesn't give you room to really sink in — after a bit of observation you see that everything repeats in exact cycles. The controls respond quite well, but the only thing that keeps you at the screen is your resolution to try that next level — only to realize later that there are no levels here, just rising numbers at the top.

From a historical perspective, Vaxine is more of a curious attempt than a classic. The nineties were a time when everyone was experimenting — even with what didn't belong on screen. This game handled it without ambition to be something big. It's aged better than it had any right to — digital graphics look like a pictogram now, and the sound design is more melancholic hum than actual sound. Hard to believe it's freely available in a browser through emulators.

However, don't expect more than fifteen minutes of play, unless you have a special reason to love geometric shapes and archive game history. Think of it as a digital curiosity that you'll play more out of nostalgia and curiosity than out of passion. Enjoy it in exactly that spirit and you won't be disappointed.
