Lagrange Point

Released in 1991 for the Japanese Famicom, Lagrange Point is remembered less for its story than for its hardware. Konami built a custom FM synthesis chip into the cartridge, which gave the game a sound palette no ordinary NES title could match. Instead of the sharp pulse waves everyone associates with the console, the soundtrack produces rounded, synthesiser-like tones, and that alone has kept the game in conversation for decades.

Underneath the audio it is a Japanese role-playing game viewed from above. You explore maps and locations, fight in turn-based battles, and build up a party through experience and equipment. What sets it apart from most of its contemporaries is the setting: rather than swords and castles, it uses a science-fiction frame of space installations and technology, at a point when the genre was almost entirely medieval fantasy. The game stayed in Japan and never received an official western release, so for years it circulated abroad mainly as a curiosity.

As a single-player experience it moves at the pace typical of eight-bit RPGs. Random encounters are frequent, progress is incremental, and long text sequences carry the plot. If you enjoy that structure, this is a competently built example with an unusual backdrop. If the rhythm of early console RPGs has never appealed to you, the sound chip alone will not change your mind.
