When I came home from work and had a moment to fire up a game, and instead ended up with a command line — that's 4DOS. It wasn't fun in the traditional sense. It was a tool, specifically a DOS shell from JP Software that let you do things faster and smarter than in the original command prompt.
4DOS was actually a shell — a layer between you and the operating system. Instead of the boring C:\> and the bare-bones cd / dir commands, you got colored text, command history you could scroll through with arrow keys, and a ton of other conveniences. It was just smarter, and if you worked with DOS on a daily basis, it was worth every penny.
Gaming here wasn't all that exciting — learning to remember how to combine commands, how to redirect output, how to write a simple batch file that would automate repetitive work. The mechanics boiled down to mastering the command line and knowing what to type. Controls? Typing. Simple, but if you didn't know it, you were lost.
In the mid-nineties, it was the few who used it seriously — programmers, network admins, people who spent long hours at a computer and couldn't afford to waste time clicking around. 4DOS brought modernity to the drab world of MS-DOS and in its own way was a predecessor to what Linux users do in the terminal today.
Today? Hardly anyone uses 4DOS anymore. Windows took the throne, DOS is ancient history, and if you want to work in a command line, you've got Windows PowerShell or Bash in modern systems. So it's a historical curiosity — interesting if you care about how we got to where we are now, but you don't need anything like this to play games.
You don't play 4DOS for fun, but as a lesson in what the working world looked like at the turn of the eighties and nineties. It's like buying an old BASIC textbook — valuable for the archive, not for your free time.
