Om spillet

Denne anmeldelsen er ikke oversatt ennå — vi viser originalen (English).

If there were a video Western, the original Doom would be the final showdown between what was and what's coming next. 1993, id Software, and with it the world of computer games changed so fundamentally that everything else suddenly became the past.

I'm in a base on some Martian moon and chaos. Beasts everywhere that couldn't be imagined even in nightmares in older games. This isn't arcade combat or puzzle-solving — this is pure warfare. You move through a 3D scene on a faked flat surface, fire weapons from pistols to rocket launchers, and collect ammo and health. The goal is simple: get through the level and kill everything that moves.

The controls are elegant. Mouse on the right, keyboard on the left, simple and intuitive, as if it was designed precisely for this moment. Doom isn't a repetitive whine — it's rhythm, pulse, feedback. The sound of weapons pulls you forward like music for a dancer. The graphics look primitive by today's standards, but in the nineties they were absolutely chilling. The demons and monsters aren't just unpleasant — they look genuinely evil.

While 3D games existed before, Doom became the reference point. This isn't just a technological leap — it's primarily a revolution in feel. Essential gaming in every LAN café, the template for dozens of clones, a Bible for a generation of creators. Today you can play it right in your browser. Has it aged? Yes. But it remains unapologetically still playable and addictive in a way that newer shooters with graphical polish can't match.

If you were born after 1995, you don't know the feeling of that first meeting with this devil. Try to fight your way through it today. You'll understand why we all copied it for the next ten years.

Doom cheats are typed straight into the running game — there is no console and no menu to open. You simply type the code on the keyboard while running through a level, and a confirmation message appears at the top of the screen after the last letter. If you are playing in the browser, click inside the game window first so the keyboard talks to the game and not to the page. The title of this entry does not say whether it runs first- or second-generation Doom data. Noclip will tell you: if IDSPISPOPD works it is Doom, if IDCLIP works it is Doom II — and the shape of IDCLEV follows from that.

Doom is one of the rare games whose cheats became common knowledge — plenty of people who never played it still know IDDQD. Doom cheats are not hidden in a menu, they are simply key sequences — which is why you can trigger one by accident. They are also worth saving for a second playthrough: IDDQD turns Doom into a shooting gallery and switches off the rule the whole game is built on, namely managing ammo and health.
