Rally-X was created by Namco, and the 1980 date on this record matches the original arcade cabinet. The MSX platform on the same line contradicts it, however: MSX did not exist until 1983, so any version for that machine must be a later conversion rather than the original release. That is worth stating plainly.

The arcade original was one of the first games with a playfield scrolling beyond the edges of the screen. You drive a car through a maze, collecting flags and evading pursuers, with a limited-fuel smokescreen for defence and a radar showing where flags and enemies are. The radar in particular was novel in 1980.

The catalogue lists a side view, whereas the game is actually played from above the maze — a common inaccuracy in data about arcade conversions. It supports one or more players alternating on a single machine.

Eighties home conversions, MSX included, inevitably gave up smoothness and colours, but the principle survived intact. Rally-X is also among the titles whose continuous background music was unusual at the time of release.

Rally-X belongs to that group of arcade games converted to virtually every home machine of the eighties. Each conversion looked different according to what the hardware allowed, and the gaps between versions are wider than a player might expect — in colour count, in scrolling smoothness, and sometimes in whether the radar survived the port at all.
