Tetcolor

Tetris in a colorful disguise — that's Tetcolor in a nutshell. Except instead of the classic black-and-white field, the falling blocks here are colored based on how they match the colors at the bottom of the playing field. A simple trick that would seem trivial if it didn't work so damn well.

I'm playing on an old DOS computer, on a screen with a resolution that fits somewhere between ice and ice. Tetcolor is a typical product of the nineties — when every developer felt the need to take an established concept, throw some color at it, and call it innovation. But here it works. It's still Tetris, about stacking L-pieces and squares, filling rows and clearing them. Except for one thing: the moment your piece lands in place, it only disappears if the color continuously matches the row below it.

The mechanic changes everything. Suddenly it matters where you throw each tetromino — color counts, orientation counts, and what's already lying below counts. The falling speed increases as usual, but the decision-making gets harder. Either you grab the color you need and deal with it immediately, or you have to wait for it. It drops like paper — meaning the visuals on screen without any graphical polish. The sounds are crisp, pixelated, exactly what you'd expect from a program someone slapped together in a week in GW-BASIC.

It's pure puzzle without frills. No story, no animations, no narrative. Just the blocks, colors, rows. In the nineties, developers lived off this kind of thing and it was normal. Today someone would call it "retro minimalist," which is fine — it ages well. There aren't any weird glitches or elements that slow the game down.

I'll grab Tetcolor when I want something between classic Tetris and a puzzle game. It's not a gemstone, but it's not an embarrassment either. You need an old computer or emulation and five minutes to spare. These games survive precisely because they're simply a good kind of dull — dull in the sense that it doesn't wear you out with, say, bad graphics, but dull in the sense that it eats your time. There's not a gram of "tired concept" in it — there's pure concept that works.
