Fire Shark

Fire Shark is an aerial shooter from the Japanese studio Toaplan, dated 1989 in this record, which matches the arcade original. The Sega Mega Drive version offered here followed later, so the catalogue year belongs to the coin-op incarnation rather than to the cartridge.

Toaplan is a key name in this genre. Its games laid the groundwork for what later became the bullet-hell school: dense enemy fire, a small precise hitbox on your aircraft, and scoring built around collecting icons that switch your weapon type. That formula was borrowed by other companies long after the studio itself had gone.

Converting an arcade shooter to the Mega Drive imposed limits. The cabinet had more memory and could display more sprites at once, so the home version had to trim enemy counts or background detail. In exchange, the console let you play without feeding coins and kept your best score between sessions.

The record lists one or more players. On vertical shooters that normally meant two people side by side, which doubles your firepower and the on-screen chaos in equal measure.

The gap between cabinet and cartridge is not purely technical. An arcade board was tuned so the player would lose and pay again, while a console version sets difficulty and lives in advance. Home conversions therefore added options that made no commercial sense in an arcade, changing the rhythm entirely: minutes in a venue became a whole evening at home.
