Fire & Ice

When gamers from the nineties ask what was being done on the edge of the keyboard in Dune, the answer is called Fire & Ice. It's a simple thing: you control two characters at once, one with the keyboard, the other with the mouse. Left hand on WASD or arrows, right hand on the mouse. It's not comfortable. It's exactly what it should have been when someone came up with it in 1993 — rough and uncompromising.

The game leads the hero and the hero through levels full of obstacles, enemies, and logic twists. You work with fire and ice, two opposing elements that complement each other. One destroys boulders, the other freezes water or air. One head above it when you figure it out right, another in despair when the timing fails you again on the fifth attempt. The puzzles are quite straightforward, but merciless — it's not the menu slapping you, it's physics and the platformer.

Playing feels old exactly as it should. Characters move slowly, decisions must be made in advance. Juggle both at once, or proceed methodically — the game will repeatedly punish you for rushing. The graphics are functional, without any attempt to reach for the stars. Sound is quiet, colors simple. It all pleases the eye only because you remember how you craved this stuff in the basement.

Fire & Ice isn't a famous game. You won't see it in top lists, nobody talked about it. But that's exactly why it's worth it. It stayed true to itself — weird, hard, without ornament. Nowadays they'd try to make it accessible, slow the pace down, add a tutorial. Here you get a problem and disappear without a hint.

Play it online, patiently, without time pressure. You can imagine someone in Czech nineties staring at the monitor and staring, staring, until they got it.
