This Game Boy Color release from 2000 adapts the American young-adult book series that ranked among the best-selling of the late 1990s. The source material centres on a group of children who gain the ability to transform into animals, and that premise matters here because it hands the adaptation an obvious mechanical layer.

Shape-changing is a concept that converts to interaction unusually well. Each form can carry different abilities, different movement and different ways past an obstacle, so the player's ongoing question is which shape the current situation calls for. That is a structure adventure and platform players already understand: you hold a set of tools and work out which one belongs here.

In 2000 the Game Boy Color was at its commercial peak. Cartridges were cheap, the installed base was enormous, and licensed titles aimed at younger players made up a substantial slice of the library. Publishers knew that book and television brands moved units, and games attached to them were produced quickly and at budgets to match.

Technically the system worked with a limited on-screen palette and a small resolution, which forced games toward bold, legible artwork. Adventure and exploration-driven titles appeared less often on it than action games, since they demanded more text and more content on the cartridge than the format comfortably allowed.

For a modern player the interest is twofold: as an example of how children's literary properties were converted into games at the time, and as a reminder of a phenomenon that marked its generation of readers deeply while remaining almost unknown outside it.
