Somewhere in the dark dungeon corridors, you're just trying to survive one second longer than last time. Rogue from 1983 is the father of all roguelike games, where death isn't a player mistake but part of the game itself. Every attempt is different, every error sends you back to the beginning, and behind you is only yourself.

You control a small man displayed as an at sign — @. Your goal is to penetrate deep dungeons, collect treasure, and most importantly, survive. You're in an environment made of letters and symbols: Z for zombie, S for snake, $ for treasure. The game is played turn by turn — you move, enemies move, nothing runs in real time. Individual levels are procedurally generated; you'll never play the same dungeon twice.

The mechanics are simple but merciless. You move with arrow keys or HJKL keys (like the vi editor), collect weapons, armor, potions. When a zombie meets you, you clash in direct combat — you see its statistics in numbers that calculate who hits whom. You can't be sure if that sword you picked up is really better, or if it's cursed. The morning of an unknown room can throw you into battle with five creatures with no tool to escape. There's no Quick Save, no reload — once you're done, you're done.

Rogue defined an entire subgenre. Everything you see today in Nethack, Dungeon Crawl, or NetHack has its seed here. The graphics are brutally bare — ASCII art, nothing more. Sound in the MS-DOS version doesn't exist; just the silence of your footsteps and the pounding of your heart. Has it aged? Yes. But not because of the graphics — those were abstract and intelligent from the start. It aged because later games added more guidance, more mercy, more of a feeling that you had a chance.
