Knowledge Adventure

I slowly click on the icon in the debugger and wait to see what happens. Knowledge Adventure was that kind of thing — an educational game that wasn't afraid to be straightforward, without being completely worthless in the process. Year 1991, DOS, and here sits next to you a program that wants to teach you things. No frills, no fake enthusiasm.

It's essentially an interactive textbook dedicated to nature, history, and scientific phenomena. The game throws you into various scenes — you can wander through history, try simple experiments, or ask about animals, plants, geography. All within one program that didn't look complicated. The goal wasn't to blow your mind with frantic gameplay, but rather to stop, read a bit, and then try something out.

You play it by clicking and reading. The interface was simple — a text window, a few pictures on screen, and you decided where to go yourself. No time pressure, no panic. It was more of an interactive book than a game in today's sense. Some things were interesting, others boring, and a few of them were actually incorrect — but that was actually part of the evolution. At a time when the first CD-ROM educational products were hitting the market, this was a decent offering.

Knowledge Adventure represented a certain approach to how computers could serve education. It wasn't alone, there was competition, and not all such attempts succeeded. But this game had its logic — you sat at a computer just like with pencil and paper, except instead of someone just dictating to you, you could ask questions and experiment at your own pace.

Today boredom would hit you faster than a punch. The graphics are paperlike, the text reeks of its era, and everything in there you'll find on the web in a second. Still, it's worth opening in an emulator if you're curious what educational software looked like in the early nineties. It's not a game you'd enjoy, but a document from a time that believed computers could teach without boring you to death in the process.

So if you're curious about old stuff — well, it's not a bad idea. There was something to it.
