Mortal Kombat burst onto the scene in 1992 as a coin-op sensation from Midway, and it stood apart from rivals like Street Fighter II thanks to its use of digitised actors. Real performers were filmed and turned into sprites, giving the fighters a distinctive, almost photorealistic look for the era. That grounded, gritty presentation, combined with a moody tournament premise, helped the game carve out its own identity in a crowded genre.

Mechanically it was a one-on-one fighter built around a roster of seven playable characters, including the likes of Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden and Sonya Blade. Its most infamous contribution, though, was the Fatality: a gruesome finishing move you could perform on a dazed opponent. The blood and the over-the-top violence caused a genuine moral panic and were a major catalyst for the creation of the ESRB ratings system in North America, ensuring the game a lasting place in gaming history.

As a fighter, the first Mortal Kombat is stiffer and less balanced than the sequels that quickly refined its formula, and the block-in-place controls feel dated next to its contemporaries. Even so, the atmosphere, the secret characters like Reptile, and the sheer novelty of its digitised look keep it interesting. It is best appreciated as the rough but hugely influential foundation of a franchise that would soon become far deeper.
