Someone calls you in the office and says they need to see world data on a single screen. And you remember that this exists. GlobalView 2.1 is a visual geographic software from the nineties that promises you'll see everything at once — the world, maps, statistics, information. It targets businesspeople and managers for whom a standard atlas wasn't enough.

GlobalView 2.1 – screenshot 1

It's basically a database with maps. You load in information about countries, cities, population, economy, and then you browse it across a rotating globe on your screen. You can scroll through continents, zoom into regions, search for specific places. That was genuinely modern. The user picks what they want to see, and the data gets rendered on a map or in a table beside it. It promises something between GIS software and an interactive atlas, just without the trainable overhead of those big professional tools.

The controls are typical for a DOS GUI application — mouse, menu at the top, dialog boxes. Navigation around the globe isn't instantaneous; things redraw with visible lag. When you want to zoom in on Asia or check out America, you're prepared for it to take its time. The processors of 1996 just aren't that quick. Data loads from floppies or the hard drive, so if you've got it all installed, it's tolerable enough. The problem is that after a few minutes you realize that what you're actually interested in isn't there — the data is either outdated or missing entirely.

GlobalView 2.1 isn't a game. It's a work tool that took a while for everyone to get comfortable with. By mid-nineties, there were already more refined geoinformation systems, and web atlases were starting to replace physical software. Today it's more of an archive curiosity — an example of how companies tried to sell interactive references on CD-ROM when the internet was just ramping up to full speed.

If you want to see what the world looked like on a computer screen in the mid-nineties without the internet, it's interesting. But you won't read through it. There are better ways to find out how many people are in Bangladesh. For students or teachers it would be a curiosity — a chance to see what data we'd settle for when we didn't have Google Earth.
