Combat is the game the Atari 2600 shipped with in 1977 — it came in the box, so practically everyone who bought the console owned it. Atari made it in house, and it counts among the very first titles of home gaming.

It is played by two people and only two. Both control tanks, jets or biplanes and try to hit each other; the selector offers dozens of variations that change the arena, the behaviour of shots and the rules of movement. There is no computer opponent, and in 1977 the console had nowhere near the power to run one.

That characteristic is what makes Combat a document of its moment. The home console then presented play as a social activity for two people in front of one television — a principle taken directly from arcade cabinets, where players also sat side by side.

Technically it is extraordinarily frugal. The Atari 2600 had kilobytes of memory and built its picture line by line in real time, so the entire arena amounts to a few lines and two sprites. Even so, the controls respond precisely and a hit registers instantly.

The console's own switches played an active part in play. The variation was selected by a lever on the machine itself, and further switches set difficulty separately for each player, so a match between an adult and a child could be evened out. That style of configuration disappeared along with the generation of consoles that had no on-screen menus.
