À propos de Air Warrior

Ce test n’est pas encore traduit — nous affichons la version originale (English).

You're flying peacefully over the ocean when suddenly an enemy appears and your screen cracks with the sharp sound of machine gun fire. Air Warrior in 1992 brought something its predecessors only dreamed of — true networked aerial combat. Online, not against the computer. Multiple players at once. That was revolutionary.

Air Warrior – screenshot 1

It's a flight simulation with action game elements. You settle into the cockpit of a fighter — map, radar, fuel, ammunition — and you emerge into scenery that would look interesting if there weren't far more polygons and colors than your 486 could handle. The objective is primitive: shoot down your opponent, return to base, repeat. Simple and addictive like everything that works.

It plays with relative ease. The controls aren't terrible, the graphics take an unconventional approach — more schematic, prioritizing clarity over polish. You fly without unnecessary simulation baggage; this isn't about atmospheric penetration, it's about combat. I know this because when there's no enemy, the game tries to occupy your mind with navigation and the map. It works. However, to play today you need a connection — the original On-Line Systems were paid — and without it you're left with somewhat solitary activity that isn't quite as addictive.

Air Warrior is an interesting footnote in gaming history. It's not the stickiest simulator and it's not the hardest-hitting action game. It's proof that online gaming is worthwhile when it has the right content. In the nineties it was a gift. Other simulators had computer opponents; here they had the breakthrough of replacing computer adversaries' scripted behavior with genuine player intelligence. That changes everything.

Today, in a browser or emulator, it's more of a museum piece. Without the online network you lose the heart of the game. But give it a try? Absolutely. You'll feel how it all started — when the phrase "I'm playing with you over the internet" sounded like something from a future magazine.
