Super Plumber

When "Super Plumber" shows up on your DOS prompt, it's not a remake. It's a pixel-based drill sergeant wanting to know if you can even walk across the screen without falling into a pit. It's vaguely reminiscent of the old Lode Runner games, but without their cosmic genius — it has ambitions that fit on an eight-bit chip.

You play as a plumber who has to cross from side to side, overcome obstacles, and collect items. Nothing fancy. The levels are made up of platforms, gaps, and the occasional enemy whose job is to knock you down or poison you. Classic nineties stuff, the kind where you pour ten hours into "a game" and you're done. A story? You don't even know one exists. Characters? They're lines on the screen. Lines that flicker now and then.

The controls work until you realize the jump is sluggish and timing is everything. You're missing the precision that quality platformers had. The graphics are rough pixelated mediocrity with no flair, and the music loops at a tempo fast enough to make your speakers dance in your brain after ten minutes. It's not painfully bad, more like boring — an engineering approach to what should have been called a "game".

The real problem? Super Plumber is forgotten because it had nothing worth remembering. It's not bad enough to get under your skin. It's just average. You'll spend one afternoon curious about it and never unwrap it again. A 1996 game archive has hundreds like it — equally forgotten.

You only play it today out of nostalgia for the nineties. Out of something that was "something," without being "something really special." If you want to go back to arcade platformers with no brilliant design, here's what's waiting. Otherwise, just grab anything from Apogee and you'll stay happy longer.
