About the game

Tätä arvostelua ei ole vielä käännetty — näytämme alkuperäisen (English).

Mr. Blobby bounces, flies, and thrashes across the screen like an inflatable toy in a hurricane. This is a straightforward platformer from 1994 that practically nobody remembers today, and for good reason — but once you dive into it, you see what the limits of computer arcades were on old DOS.

Mr. Blobby – screenshot 1

You play as a blob, which is essentially the precursor to all those later eponymous characters. The goal is classic: collect items, jump between platforms, avoid enemies. No plot, no dialogue, no reason. Just a screen full of barriers and your puzzle-solving friend in a color that hurts your eyes — you'd swear it's a graphics tweak, but no, it was actually intentional. There aren't many levels, and each one lasts exactly as long as your patience holds out.

The controls are precise and responsive, which is surprising for a game with this kind of graphics budget. You can jump, you can climb, sometimes you can even fly. Problems arise when the game can't figure out whether you should jump over an obstacle or crash into it. It glitches. Often. And without logic. Which means you die not because you botched your timing, but because the game itself isn't sure what's happening.

The graphics are second-tier at best — there are details, but the design is from an era when a pixel wasn't a unit, it was an ideology. Sound? It exists. It screeches in your ears like a metal scrap bin during a storm. It's not evil, it's just not a reason to turn the sound on.

Why do we remember it? We don't. That's exactly why there are five thousand games like this. It was an attempt, not a hit. Today someone might give you a euro for it — nostalgia is fine. But if you want to play it just out of boyish curiosity about what those times were like, you'll find it in every DOS game collection on the internet. It takes half an hour to get through and then you slide off with the feeling that you've touched something with an antenna that should have been forgotten long ago.
