Eat It

A cobalt blue maze is trying to eat you. Not metaphorically, but literally — the labyrinth closes in around you as you collect dots and try not to trap yourself. Eat It from 1989 is simple, brutal, and once you realize what's happening, it stops being a game and becomes the director of your own funeral.

You're a small square in a maze full of edible content. Your goal is clear: eat all the dots and light up the white line. There's one catch — as you move, the maze closes behind you. You eat the path you've walked. Soon enough, you have nowhere to go. You must chew your way through the maze while tracking where the remaining space is, and not seal off your own path to the last dots. Simple on paper, terrifyingly tight in practice.

The controls are DOS-era, as you remember it — arrow keys, resistance is noticeable, graphics are minimalist. There's no coddling here, no animations to buy you time. Every move is yours, every mistake is yours. The music — if you can call it music — reminds you with its skeletal beeping that computer technology in the eighties wasn't made for the faint of heart. The game nags at you and cheat codes won't help, because the logic error is yours.

Eat It wasn't a hit that players remember with nostalgic tears. It's more like one of those quiet games you downloaded on a floppy, played for half an hour, and forgot about. But it had something — a principle that would later be developed into Pac-Man and other maze games. Here it was raw, dense, without frills.

Today, Eat It is a curiosity. I'd play it just for the surprise of how much it forces you to think about every move in a room that's slowly closing in on you. It's not fun, it's an intellectual challenge. Emulator networks make it freely available, so wasting time is purely on you.
