The Rocky Horror Show is a 1985 Commodore 64 game presented in third person. The title matches the musical stage show of the same name, widely known through its film version – licensing theatrical and cinematic properties was a standard route to visibility for home computer games in the mid-eighties.

The British eight-bit scene was at peak productivity in 1985. Development teams were small, often only a few people, and a game came together in a matter of months. That made unusual subjects viable: where a large publisher would hesitate, a small team took the chance, because what was at stake was time rather than a budget.

The Commodore 64 offered favourable conditions for this kind of adaptation. Hardware sprites, a decent colour palette and the SID sound chip – capable of far more than beeping – mattered a great deal for a game tied to a musical. On this platform music was rarely an afterthought; it was frequently the main reason a game stayed in people's memories.

A house full of rooms as a play space was a favoured structure of the period. It let a game be assembled from discrete screens connected by doorways, requiring neither smooth scrolling nor a large map held in memory.
