Crime Patrol is an interactive movie from the golden age of laserdisc shooting galleries. American Laser Games, the company famous for the western Mad Dog McCree, put it in arcades in 1993, and a year later this DOS version arrived on CD-ROM. The principle is unchanged: full-motion video with real actors plays on screen and you shoot the criminals before they shoot you — with a light gun in the arcade, with a mouse on the PC.

Compared to its western predecessors, Crime Patrol added a career ladder. You start as a rookie cop on a routine beat, work your way through undercover assignments to a SWAT team, and finally join Delta Force to take on terrorists. Every rung means tougher opponents and faster gunfights, while the actors ham it up with visible relish in gas stations, banks and warehouses.

The gameplay is a pure reflex test. The video pauses for a beat, a criminal pops out, and the window to hit him is mercilessly short; mistakes cost lives and scenes are learned by trial and error. This is where the game is weakest: if you hate memorisation, you will be seeing the game-over screen a lot. The DOS version also looks noticeably worse than the arcade original due to video compression.

And yet Crime Patrol still has its charm. The overacting, the nineties jackets and the earnestly delivered one-liners make it an accidental comedy, and the short scenes keep tempting you into one more try. As a document of the era when full-motion-video games looked like the future, it is a mandatory stop — just do not expect depth from it.
