Tex McPhilip 2: Road to Divinity [v1.5]

Tex McPhilip takes up his revolver, and it's clear this isn't a western meant to be taken seriously. Road to Divinity is a point-and-click adventure from 2002, when the genre was already dominated by polished graphics and voice acting. This game plays a different game entirely — simple, pixelated artwork that doesn't even awkwardly show off. It's a traditional logic adventure with absurd humor. Tex is something like a drifter in the desert, setting out on a journey to find the so-called God (Divinity). But the road is full of unnecessary shopkeepers, bizarre characters, and mostly objects you need to pick up to make things work. Combinations, puzzles, inventory items — classic stuff that hasn't changed much since people were doing this ten years before. Playing is straightforward — you click on people, objects, doors. Each location is a small area where you move in four directions and search for what can be picked up or talked to. The game doesn't hold your hand, so sometimes you really scratch your head wondering why someone wants this particular combination of things. Dialogues aren't fun, just tedious. Graphics from 2002 in this style already look archaic — nothing fancy, but it doesn't hurt either. Sounds? Minimal, just filler. Road to Divinity is something that made sense in the mid-nineties, when it came from hobby programmers on PCs that cost next to nothing. By the mid-2000s it was already dead of its kind. The game holds together because it has its own world, but that's no reason for it to steal your time today. Absurdity without charm, logic without joy. Today I see it as a small piece of period curiosity. When you want a truly great point-and-click, you reach for LucasArts classics or later Day of the Tentacle instead. You'll only play this if you're nostalgic for forgettable adventures from small publishers and really want to know what was being made when indie didn't even have a name yet.
