Madagascar 3

A lion crawls across the roof, a zebra runs upside down, and I'm trying to figure out if this is a game or a simulator of mental breakdown. Madagascar 3 on Mega Drive is a jerky evening mess that clings to something between a chase game and a platformer, with both overlapping at the dumbest possible moments.

It's an adaptation of the animated film with the same name — you know the deal, lions, zebras, a hippo, everyone heading to the circus across Africa and Europe. On Mega Drive it should be simple: jump, shoot something, get through eight levels, done. But whoever programmed this apparently communicated with the game through a translator who got everything wrong. You control the main hero — usually Alex or someone else — and your objective isn't clear even on the second look. Sometimes you're shooting, sometimes jumping, sometimes trying to collect something that behaves like it's from a completely different game.

Character movement is like dragging a corpse across the floor. The animation is stiff, jumps have no follow-through, and when you try to land in a precise spot, the character gets you there, but not where you wanted. The camera indecisively switches angles and in some scenes isn't even sure what it should be showing. The graphics do their job — you recognize who's who — but there's no joy in it. The sound is weak, until it disappears completely.

This game held a fascinating contradiction: it's so bad it's almost interesting. But only until you realize it's not intentionally bad. It's just incompetence. After four levels you'll drop it and go back to why you actually launched Sonic or Castlevania on Mega Drive — where you know what's happening and where.

These days you only play it as a curiosity. Animated movie games on older consoles were often hit-or-miss, but here it's so hopeless it becomes a fascinating document about what goes wrong when a studio has no time, resources, or desire. Don't touch it even for nostalgia's sake.
