Street Smart

SNK put Street Smart into arcades in 1989, at a moment when fighting games were still finding their shape and nobody knew whether the future belonged to one-on-one duels or to beating up entire streets. Street Smart lands somewhere between the two: combat is viewed from the side, but you can move into depth as in a beat 'em up while still facing a single opponent.

The setting is street-level, without tournament trappings. The fighting is coarse, blows are slower and heavier than in the technical fighters that followed, and much of the tactical layer comes down to holding distance and striking the instant your opponent opens up. The cabinet was built on the assumption that you would lose and feed it more coins, so the difficulty climbs quickly.

1989 is an important dividing line in the industry. Arcade boards had power home computers could not touch, and fighting games were their headline draw. Street Smart belongs to that wave as a title remembered only in passing today, yet it shows how differently combat was being approached before the genre settled into its familiar form.
