The Terminator - Future Shock

When news broke in the nineties that someone was making a 3D Terminator game, your eyes lit up. Future Shock isn't exactly Quake, but in 1995 it was a blast — you're aiming at faceless figures in apocalyptic ruins with weapon icons on the bottom bar and a semi-transparent first-person view, like you're looking through a pipe.

It's straightforward 3D action without investigation or story — you run between metallic structures and robots, blast lasers and grenades, pick up ammo and health. The maps are angular, textured, and dull, as if generated in CAD for training software. The goal? Survive waves of Terminators and reach the elevator to the next level. Nothing more.

Controls are basic and clunky — move with four keys, mouse to turn, click to shoot. There's no acceleration, reflexes could be sharper, but for the time it was perfectly fine. The problem isn't the mechanics, but the core concept: a shooting range with no ideas. The creators never actually connected the game to the original source material — it could've been any generic sci-fi action with stock drones. Terminator is just on the box.

What's interesting is that it exists at all. Licensed movie games were usually a mess, but Future Shock isn't bad from a commercial standpoint — it looks more like an ambitious attempt that hit reality: the relatively tight budgets for 3D games in the mid-nineties meant bland design as compensation for technical limits. It's not a bad game, just boring. Empty. Like walking through a dentist's waiting room.

Today I fire it up in nostalgic moments — when I want to feel that strange early-3D essence, when everyone seemed to believe that mere isometry and polygons were enough for fun. It's not Alien Vs. Predator and it's not Doom either. It's a dusty husk with a famous brand's logo, something you'll play when bored, but you won't lose sleep over it.
