Bust-A-Move

I was able to sit at Bust-A-Move for two hours and swear it was only a quarter. This game is a thief with your time — quiet, inconspicuous, without warning.

Bust-A-Move is a puzzle game by Taita, originally an arcade hit that made its way to every available platform including PC. On your monitor you'll see a playing field full of colored bubbles and you shoot more bubbles from below using a rotating cannon. Three of the same color together — and the cluster pops. Simple physics of bouncing off walls makes it something between billiards and Tetris.

The controls are absolutely straightforward: arrow keys or mouse to aim, shoot. No tutorials, no manuals, no entry barrier. But the difficulty grows organically — what starts as relaxed color shuffling soon turns into precise geometric exercise. A poorly timed shot will bury your entire plan and force you to recalculate the wall bounce again. And again. The key word is "just one more".

What the game delivered was transporting that arcade rhythm to home PC without losing that right dose of addiction. Unlike Tetris, where you fall into a trance passively, here you actively aim — and every shot is a conscious decision. That gives the player a false sense of control, which is exactly why it's so hard to stop. The 1997 PC version runs solidly, the graphics are simple but readable, and the sounds are exactly what you remember from Taita at that time — cheerful, a bit cheap, and slightly annoying after an hour.

Today Bust-A-Move suits anyone who wants to take a twenty-minute break from the complexity of modern games. Or, as it usually goes with it, two hours. It runs in the browser without problems and needs no setup — just open it, start playing and remember why the nineties were so honest when it came to puzzle games.
