Boulder Dash is a bona fide classic of the early home-computer age, created by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray and first published by First Star Software in 1984. Though it began on machines like the Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64, it spread to virtually every platform of the decade, the DOS PC included, and its core idea has echoed through puzzle games ever since. You control Rockford, a little prospector digging through underground caves to collect a quota of diamonds before a timer runs out.

The genius is in its physics. Boulders and gems obey gravity, so tunnelling beneath a rock sends it crashing down — potentially onto your head or onto an enemy. Clever players learn to trigger controlled avalanches, trap creatures that transform into diamonds, and thread paths through collapsing earth. What looks like a simple dig-and-collect game reveals itself as a tight, deterministic puzzle where every scoop of dirt has consequences. Its influence runs straight through to countless later titles, and even four decades on the original's blend of quick reflexes and spatial planning remains sharp, tense and endlessly replayable.
