If you came looking for strategy or puzzle sophistication, you've wandered into the wrong room.

This is a minigame, singular and stubborn about it. You see Alex on screen, you poke him, he reacts, you poke again. The entire mechanical vocabulary consists of timing and target selection. It's the kind of thing someone wrote on a Tuesday afternoon, uploaded to a BBS, and never thought about again. Yet here we are, two decades later, talking about it.

What kept people playing—and they did play it—was the sheer brazenness of the concept married to spectacularly crude humor. The Spectrum's limitations meant everything was blocky and loud, which somehow made a game about hitting a man in the eye feel transgressive in a way a modern physics engine could never achieve. There's no animation budget for dignity. Just rectangles, collision detection, and the knowledge that you're doing exactly what the menu promised.

The controls are as direct as the premise: move and hit. No combos, no depth, no hidden mechanics rewarding skillful play. Repetition is the game. Repetition is also the joke. Whether that constitutes entertainment depends entirely on whether you're the type who finds absurdity funny or merely exhausting. The Spectrum audience in '98 leaned toward the former.
