Those few pixels on the screen immediately nudge you toward a simple task: collect all the diamonds, don't get beaten by enemies, and make it to the next level. Digger from 1983 is one of those games that seems like it was sketched on the back of a napkin, yet it keeps you glued to the screen longer than you'd expect.

You play as a character (call him a digger or prospector) who moves through a maze filled with diamonds and other treasures. The goal is clear: grab all the valuables, dodge the harpoons and creatures chasing you. It's linear progression: clear the area, move on, repeat until your monitors and brain give out. The setting isn't drenched in story — the game simply is, no frills and no cinematic cutscenes.

The mechanics are dignified for their era. You move in four directions, collect objects, use special tiles to ignite things or throw bombs. It's not overly complex, but it's all about reflexes and planning. At times you feel the game pushing you toward that sweet spot between boredom and frustration — the right balance for the eighties. The CGA graphics are primitive, but clean. This probably isn't a groundbreaking achievement, more of a solid experiment from when people were still testing what a personal computer could deliver.

Digger shows up nowadays in lists as a grandfather of modern roguelikes and puzzle games — something between Pac-Man and Boulder Dash. In its era, it was one of many attempts to bring arcade fun to home computers, not a breakthrough. Yet that very simplicity, without unnecessary gimmicks, makes it surprisingly playable.

Who'll dig it? Anyone after pure logic-driven fun without hand-holding and tutorials. Those who love retro arcades and don't mind pixels. Or simply the curious types who want to understand what players did back when graphics were a luxury and games were just games. I won't need to offer it in a browser — this half-century-old gem is available in so many places that it'd be a shame not to recommend it here.
