Sorcerer's Apprentice

A Disney licence on the Atari 2600 in 1983. Sorcerer's Apprentice draws on the best known section of the film Fantasia, the sequence with the apprentice and the brooms that carry water and cannot be stopped. The game turns that motif into a simple arcade situation where you have to respond to what accumulates on screen.

By 1983 the Atari 2600 had several years behind it and its limits were well understood: a handful of moving objects per screen, coarse blocks of colour and no room for detailed animation. Licensed games therefore could not be built on faithfully retelling a film. They had to rest on one recognisable situation that a player could identify by silhouette and colour. That is what Sorcerer's Apprentice does.

Atari was publishing film-based games in volume at the time, and some of them became textbook examples of rushed production. This title falls among those that tried to work within the hardware's actual capabilities rather than reaching for something the console could not deliver.
