Clyde & Zeke

Two guys, one key, and an endless tunnel full of traps. Clyde & Zeke is a simple logic game that was sold as shareware in the nineties and mostly got played during breaks between more serious titles.

It plays like a puzzle maze. You've got two characters that you need to guide to the goal, except half the path is missing. You collect keys, open doors, some obstacles are caused by gravity, others by logic—pure nasty logic. There's no shooting or time pressure, just cold mathematics—for both characters to reach the goal, you need to figure out the right sequence of moves. Like Sokoban, except with two guys instead of boxes.

The controls are straightforward—arrow keys, spacebar for action, nothing fancy. The player sets the pace themselves, can go back and try again. But here's the catch: after ten levels or so, the light fun turns into a real grind. The difficulty spikes hard and a lot of players simply give up. The game won't give you hints, won't help, just silently waits for you to figure it out yourself. In 1994 that was standard; today it would seem unimaginably brutal.

Visually it's spartan—single-color guys, simple square tiles, sounds like a computer learning to sing. The graphics don't wow you, but they don't repel either. The game sold cheap or free, so nobody expected fancy animation and orchestral music.

Clyde & Zeke is a case of noble simplicity that doesn't age perfectly. When you fire it up in DOSBox today, you see the effort, clean design, and solid game core. But the game demands a kind of patience that few people have these days. If you love logic puzzles without annoying graphics and without endless dialogue, give it a shot. If you just want to breeze through and win, it'll feel dull to you.
