Archipelagos

You have three minutes to tell yourself what grabbed you about a game. If you can't remember, it probably wasn't much of a sensation. Archipelagos, however, is the opposite case — a minimalist puzzle game that burrows into your brain precisely because it doesn't make unnecessary fuss.

It's a puzzle from 1989 that, for reasons unknown, nobody lists as a standout in emulator collections. You get a map of variously intricate islands and your task is to connect them all with a single unbroken path. Nothing more. No story, no characters, no reason why it should be exactly this way. Just pure thinking.

The controls are stupid simple — you mark squares with your cursor, the game colors them to your surprise and measures time. You'll breeze through the first few levels with your eyes closed. Then their membrane apparently begins to expand — more islands, weirder shapes, paths into dead ends you don't notice until half a minute later. You realize how lazily you think. How you usually take the path that looks most natural, and only after the tenth attempt do you say to yourself: "But no, I have to pull from here differently."

Aged? In the best sense of the word, not at all. The graphics were minimalist back in the eighties, so it doesn't bother you today. There's nothing here that feels outdated — colored squares on a black background and that's the era. The logic works the same as four decades ago. It's missing a few things — sound, music, story, reason — but those things would just be distracting in this game.

These days you'll play it in an emulator or DOSBox during a coffee break. It's not an evening game — it's a ten-minute game when you want to switch your brain off from everything else and think only about where that path leads. The old-timers will appreciate it as brain exercise, the younger crowd can try it as gentle training against procrastination. It just works.
