Ocean Ranger

Year 1988, a disk handed to me by a vendor at a flea market as a bonus along with a C64. Ocean Ranger. The name sounded solid — and the game didn't let it down.

Ocean Ranger by Activision is an underwater simulator where you pilot a submarine and navigate the ocean depths. The setting was unusual for its time — the sea as an environment wasn't as well-trodden then as space or the battlefield, and the game benefited from that. The objective boils down to exploration, avoiding obstacles and enemies, and simply surviving in a hostile aquatic environment.

The controls are straightforward, as befits an MS-DOS simulator from the late eighties. You navigate the submarine, monitor the instruments, and react to what moves around you. The pace is leisurely, deliberate — this game doesn't rush and doesn't expect you to frantically mash buttons. What simulators of this era valued was patience. Those who didn't have it left after ten minutes. Those who stayed got atmosphere.

The 1988 PC version naturally looked different from the C64 original — the CGA palette impressed no one back then, but playability survived the transition without major losses. On a 286 processor and Hercules monitor it certainly wasn't a dream, but submarine tension translated even through four colors. Today of course graphics age worst of all, and that applies doubly here. The sound design through the PC speaker is what you'd expect — basically nothing much. Anyone with the option would rather keep it silent.

Today, Ocean Ranger will be played mostly by those who actually remember that era and want to check if the memory holds up, or by committed genre historians wanting to see where underwater simulators came from. For everyone else, it's a tough-to-digest artifact — no tutorial, no training wheels, no gentle introduction. Emulators make it easily accessible, but nobody can make the controls friendlier. If underwater themes captivate you and you like diving into the original source of the genre from the eighties, Ocean Ranger deserves an hour of your attention.
