Indy grabbed his hat and jumped into a cave. Were we all expecting something better in 1987? The answer is no. Indiana Jones in Revenge of the Ancients is a text adventure with static screens, released by someone who apparently knew that a popular character would carry the game on its own.

It's a point-and-click adventure in its most primitive form. You explore locations, collect items, combine them with your surroundings, solve simple puzzles. The story takes you through several locations filled with artifacts and dangers trying to slow Indy down. The graphics are pixelated, the color palette is limited, but with a little imagination you'll get oriented in the first half hour.

The problem comes right after that. The controls are uncomfortably slow, interaction with objects often fails, and if you take something you'll need later, the game simply locks you out without warning. You can't go back and get the item later — you just picked the wrong object at the wrong time. That's not a puzzle, that's a lottery. Plus, the dialogues are pointless and many elements are completely unintuitive. You fumble around for a while, then suddenly realize the only possible solution was something you never thought of.

Worth playing today? Only if you enjoy broken games where the second half is practically unplayable without a guide. You'll have a better time with Indiana Jones in his classic LucasArts adventures. You'll only grab this one out of curiosity, and that's not enough.
