Frogs, from 1978, sits among the earliest arcade output you can still launch today. Gremlin Industries built it in the second half of the seventies, when the industry was barely forming and a video game meant a cabinet with a monochrome monitor inside.

You control a frog moving between floating lily pads, catching insects with its tongue. The idea is instantly understood and unforgiving in practice: judge the moment prey comes within range and commit, because there is no second attempt within an attempt. The game runs until your lives are gone, and score is the only measurement that exists.

Technically it documents how games were made before microprocessor boards with real graphics capability arrived. The image relies on a colour overlay across the screen, audio is minimal, and the entire experience rests on one mechanic refined as far as it will go. No levels in the modern sense, no narrative, just an escalating demand for precision.

There is a neat historical thread here too. The frog motif returned to arcades a few years later and became one of the most recognisable in the whole industry, which puts Frogs at the head of a surprisingly long line.
