When Nemo headed back into the ocean in 2004, I had the luck of following him on a tiny Game Boy Advance screen. It's not exactly a Pixar hit — it's your standard platformer trying to capitalize on the movie's popularity, and it did so only moderately well.

You play as Nemo or other characters from the ocean family in linear levels packed with enemies and obstacles. The goal is simple: get through the scene, collect corals and pieces of wreckage. The graphics are colorful and cute in their own way — more like caricatures than a faithful interpretation of Pixar's world, but that's not worth criticizing for a GBA game. Those in the know will notice that the mobile hardware of that era had its limits, and the developers made peace with them without grand ambitions.

The game plays like any other 2D platformer of that era. You jump, collect, dodge enemies or take them down with close combat. The controls are solid, though everything aims at keeping the levels as straightforward as possible. There's nothing here that forces you to think — you just move forward and attack relentlessly. After a few levels you'll try something a bit trickier, but it's not exactly revolutionary. The game is just challenging enough that it doesn't feel like a total breeze.

The nostalgia hits especially hard because it's pure fun without pretense. It's not Metroid and it's not King's Quest — it's a way to pass the time during a commute and feel close to the movie universe. Back in the nineties, games like this rolled off the assembly line, and this is an average specimen. Interesting more for the fact that it exists than for being innovative.

Playing it today means going back to a time when mobile platformers were seen as a natural extension of movies. It's not gourmet fare, but if you're curious what it looked like when Pixar still pumped out every hit to handhelds and consoles without much care, it's worth a try. It's a soothing journey through a world full of no surprises — exactly what Game Boy Advance was made for.
