Bahamut Senki

Bahamut Senki is a strategy game published in 1991 by Sega itself for the Mega Drive and aimed at the Japanese market. It never received an official release outside Japan, which makes it one of those titles Western players only encountered long after the fact.

The view is isometric and the game is single-player. Isometric presentation was popular for Mega Drive strategy because it let developers suggest terrain and elevation without rendering actual three-dimensional space. The console had enough memory for large tile-based maps and fast redraws, so moving units turn by turn across a landscape posed no problem. The real constraint was the volume of text that had to fit on a cartridge, and that was often exactly why Japanese strategy titles never got translated.

During this period Sega used the Mega Drive to test genre breadth, publishing slower strategy and role-playing titles for the domestic audience alongside its action flagships. Bahamut Senki sits in that group, pairing a fantasy setting with army command.
