Alpha Mission

Alpha Mission is a shooter from SNK, released in 1986 on the Nintendo NES as a home conversion of an arcade original. You fly upward over scrolling terrain while enemies arrive in waves from the top and the sides, and the landscape below carries its own targets that require a separate form of attack.

What sets it apart from most vertical shooters of the time is the upgrade system. Rather than simply raising your firepower with each pickup, you collect equipment parts and activate them once you have accumulated enough energy. That means choosing when to spend an upgrade, and learning through experience which ones matter in which section. It gave the game a layer of decision-making in a genre that usually ran purely on reflexes.

The NES version works within the console's limits: fewer objects on screen and simpler backgrounds than the coin-op, but the progression structure survives intact. Difficulty is steep, and the design assumes repetition until enemy layouts become familiar. SNK was still building the reputation it would later cement on Neo Geo hardware, and Alpha Mission belongs to its early attempts at bringing an arcade sensibility into the home. It is a single-player game. For anyone interested in eight-bit shooters that offer more than an escalating missile count, the weapon system is the reason to look.

The arcade original appeared under a different title, and comparing the two versions is worthwhile in itself: the differences come down mostly to stage length and to how many enemies the hardware could put on screen at once.
