1943: The Battle of Midway

Capcom followed its shooter 1942 with a sequel set around Midway, and in 1987 it reached the NES. The foundation is unchanged: you fly a plane, the screen scrolls from top to bottom, and enemy formations arrive in patterns that can be learned by heart.

What 1943 adds is an energy bar. Instead of dying on a single hit, your aircraft has a gauge that drains when you take damage - and drains slowly over time as well, so hiding cautiously in a corner is not a viable strategy. That changes the rhythm of the whole game: collecting pickups is not a bonus but a requirement. Upgradeable weapons and a screen-clearing special attack round out the additions.

Bringing it to 8-bit hardware was a demanding conversion. The arcade version carried more enemies and richer backgrounds, and the NES had to cut object counts and colours to hold its frame rate. Even so, the port succeeded well enough that players remember it as a legitimate version in its own right rather than as a faint echo of the cabinet.

The Pacific War setting was standard material in Japanese arcade production of the era, and the game treats it loosely - scenery rather than simulation. For a modern player, 1943 works as a good entry point into vertical shooters: the rules are simple, difficulty climbs steadily, and death is always traceable to a specific mistake. If you have never played a classic Japanese shooter, this is a sensible starting place, since it does not yet demand the level of memorisation later 1990s titles require.
