Zamzara

Zamzara appeared in 1989 for the Commodore 64, written by Jukka Tapanimäki, one of the most distinctive Finnish programmers of the eight-bit era. His games are recognisable by their technical execution — he could get movement and effects out of the C64 that competitors on the same machine could not manage — and by demanding difficulty that requires precision and memorisation.

Zamzara is a single-player action platformer. Progress depends on mastering jumps, timing and orientation in levels that often do not let you simply backtrack. That is characteristic of Tapanimäki's work: the games leave little room for error and reward repetition and learning layouts by heart. The publisher was the British budget label Rack-It, through which a number of genuinely good games reached players at a low price.

By the end of the eighties the Commodore 64 had seven years of accumulated programming knowledge behind it, and coders were extracting results nobody anticipated at launch — multicolour scrolling, music pushing the SID chip to its limits, smooth animation of many objects at once. Zamzara draws directly on that accumulated expertise.
