When a galaxy map appears on your screen and you're choosing between exploring unknown systems or trading spices, you know you're in Starflight 2 — a 1989 game that puts you in the captain's seat of a merchant vessel and lets you decide what comes next. It's not a classic RPG, it's not a classic sim — it's an experiment that somehow works.

It's a trading sci-fi where your ship flies between star systems and you manage your crew, fuel, cargo, and encounters with aliens. It's not about combat, it's not purely logistics. Time keeps running — days count down, your hungry crew gets restless, and you've got to earn your way home somehow. Each system is different, each alien encounter can end in a trade or someone trying to palm off a fake map on you.

Playing is meditative and slow, but that's the point. You read long passages of text, click through menus, wait to see what happens. The graphics are minimal — mostly text and simple pictures. Doesn't sound sexy, but if it grabs you, time flies. You have to plan, trust your gut on when to buy what, who to trust. I suspect plenty of players got bored right in the tutorial.

Starflight 2 lives in memory mostly because of the first game, but here the creators clearly wanted to try something different — trading instead of space opera. For its time it was an experiment; today it sounds like a board game-based simulator. It's aged in a stylistically readable way, but the mechanics aren't as smooth as newer games. It lacks the dynamism players would expect today.

Only someone specific will play it now — a text adventure fan, a sci-fi lover, or someone digging into experimental gameplay from the nineties. You'll find an old DOS emulator in your browser, it starts in seconds and you're there. It'll be slow, it'll be dull, maybe even pointless. But someone will find peace in it.
