Sommetje

Sommetje is a Dutch educational MS-DOS program from 1992. The title is the diminutive of "som", a sum or arithmetic problem, and the content follows: short drill exercises in basic arithmetic, answered one after another with immediate feedback on whether the result was right.

The Netherlands produced a great many such programs in the early nineties. Schools and households were moving from eight-bit machines and MSX to the PC, and teachers frequently wrote their own drill software in BASIC or Pascal. It spread through computer clubs and disk libraries rather than shops, which is why international retro catalogues barely register it — even though for a whole generation of Dutch children this kind of program was their first contact with a computer.
