Putt-Putt and Fatty Bear's Activity Pack (MS-DOS, Windows 95/3.1, Macintosh) (CD-ROM) (1994)

Putt-Putt and Fatty Bear. Names that meant one thing in the nineties — interactive entertainment for kids that wasn't stupid. And these two buddies together in a shared Activity Pack? That was a hit for schoolkids just getting into Windows 95.

It was a collection of mini-games and activities where Putt-Putt (a car with personality) and Fatty Bear (a bear drawn by someone who found humor in a chubby character) took turns at various tasks. Minigames that tickled logic — puzzles, riddles, drawing, memory sharpening. Nothing brutally difficult, more like a light educational mix that fit on one CD and didn't end when the kid got bored after two minutes. And what mattered: it had space charm. The dialogues were witty, the sounds of a robot fortune-teller or wizard made you listen even when you'd heard it for the fifth time.

It played simply — you clicked with the mouse, dragged things, entered answers. Colorful, interactive interface, typical of early-90s edutainment. The graphics weren't anything glorious, but had the right stylization — light, playful, easy on the eyes. Key was the absence of frustrating moments. The game didn't slap you for a wrong attempt, didn't rush you with a timer, just offered another round. That's forgotten nowadays — when edutainment games didn't treat kids like enemies.

Putt-Putt himself had his own line of logic games on CD back then, same with Fatty Bear. But having them lead together? That was clever marketing. Every fan of one character got nudged to try the other. What stuck in memory was knowing what you were getting — quality content without that cringey pedagogical tone. LucasArts games from the mid-nineties simply understood why you'd make stuff for kids and how not to act like an idiot doing it.

Today you can play it in a browser if you find a proper image. It's not a game you'll go crazy for, it's not one modern kids will play either. But if you want to remember the time when CD-ROM was majesty and educational games dared to be funny — this is exactly that.
