Cobra Command

Cobra Command by Data East puts NES players at the controls of a combat helicopter on rescue duty. You fly over hostile territory, trade fire with ground installations and enemy aircraft, and — most importantly — winch prisoners of war up from the battlefield, which gives the shooting a purpose beyond destruction.

The catalogue year deserves a note. This entry says 1992, while the NES helicopter game is known from the late 1980s, so the date here most likely reflects a later release or reissue. To complicate matters further, Data East used the Cobra Command name for an entirely different product as well — a laserdisc arcade movie-game — giving the brand a genuinely tangled history.

In play, this is honest 8-bit military action. The helicopter feels heavier and more deliberate than a pure shoot-em-up craft, and the rescue objectives add a light tactical layer: sorties have to account for fuel, armament and where the hostages are pinned down.

Helicopter games formed a small subgenre of their own on the NES, and military themes ran through the whole 8-bit era. Data East was a veteran of exactly this territory, with a long line of arcade and console action titles to its name.
