Coach K College Basketball arrived on the Sega Mega Drive in 1995, carrying the name of a college coach as the badge of authenticity that EA Sports liked to put on the box. By that year the sixteen-bit hardware was thoroughly understood, and sports titles were the clearest proof of it: fluid scrolling, readable statistics screens and enough animation frames to make a jump shot look like a jump shot.

The action uses a side view of the court. The camera tracks the ball and slides along with the attacking team, which was the standard solution for basketball on consoles of this generation. It keeps both line-ups visible at once, leaves room for rebound scrambles under the basket, and makes a fast break read clearly even on a small television set.

College basketball gives the game a different rhythm from professional league titles. An enormous number of schools compete, and the season ends in a knockout bracket where a single defeat ends everything. That structure rewards a different kind of play than an eighty-game regular season does, and it is the reason the college licence was worth holding separately from the professional one.

The record lists both single-player and multiplayer options. On the Mega Drive that meant a second controller and a friend on the same sofa, and that mode is what kept sixteen-bit sports games in circulation long after the computer opponent had become predictable to anyone who played a few evenings in a row.
