Lunar Lander

Lunar Lander is one of the defining games of the vector era. Atari put it into arcades in 1979 using a display that drew lines rather than pixels — the electron beam traced the exact segments the program specified, producing a bright, razor-sharp image with no jagged edges that no raster screen of the period could match.

The game itself is an exercise in patience and fine control. Your module descends towards the lunar surface, gravity pulls it down, and you have a finite amount of fuel to slow it enough to touch down safely. The landing has to be slow and close to vertical; arrive fast or at an angle and it is over. The terrain is jagged, flat pads are narrow, and the tightest ones carry the highest score multipliers, so the design constantly tempts you into risk.

The original cabinet used a throttle lever, letting you feed in thrust progressively rather than switching it on and off. That detail matters enormously to how the game feels: the skill is in short, early corrections, not in holding a button. The physics are simple but honest, and momentum never forgives you.

There is no story and no progression — one player, a score, and difficulty that tightens.
