Half-Death: Terror at White Mesa

When you start a new game and someone immediately tries to scare you, you know the developer values their own time more than yours. Half-Death: Terror at White Mesa is a survival horror from 2005, when this genre was still being explored rather cautiously on PC — Resident Evil was on consoles, Silent Hill too, and Polish and Russian developers were just getting used to the idea that players didn't have to just shoot or jump.

You're trapped at the White Mesa mountain station and need to escape. Sure, there are some creepy things and bats around you, but it's really about survival — finding keys, access cards, knowing where to go. The game tries to be grim, but instead feels cold. Brief text snippets when you find items sometimes tell you something scary, then nothing, then something again. Like the developer wasn't quite sure if they were making a horror game or a detective story.

The controls are old-school — you move through a grid-based map in first person, the mouse doesn't work, everything is keyboard-controlled. You collect items, doors open when you have the right key. There's no rush, no countdown timer, no pounding heartbeat when an enemy spots you — you just move forward, read old messages on computers, try to figure out what happened here. The graphics are in that era's style, axis-aligned, perfectly functional.

Half-Death isn't bad, it's just... not yearning for your heartbeat. It lacks tension, it lacks characters, it lacks those scenes that stick with you as memories. It's more of a technical exercise in building horror atmosphere than truly capturing it. Sometimes the music lands perfectly, sometimes everything is silent and therefore all the more boring.

These days you'd play it more as an archival curiosity — to travel back to when indie developers were experimenting outside the mainstream. It's not a game you'd show your classmates and have them jealous. But it's an earnest attempt, and that has value in itself.
