De Grotten van Oberon was published in 1985 by the Dutch company Radarsoft for the Commodore 64. The title translates as the caves of Oberon, and the game belongs to a body of work produced for the domestic Dutch-speaking market, which is exactly the sort of output that international databases tend to record thinly.
Radarsoft was a notable Dutch publisher during the 8-bit years. Its catalogue sat outside the Anglo-American mainstream, and a portion of it leaned on educational or locally focused subjects. Releasing games in the national language had a practical rationale: in the mid-eighties English was not yet a safe assumption, and localised text was a competitive advantage.
The record classifies it as an adventure with a top-down view. On a C64 in 1985 that usually means moving a character across a map assembled from screens, collecting objects, working out a route onward, and clearing obstacles that require the right item or the right order of actions. Saving progress on tape or disk was limited, so passwords often carried the load instead.
The Commodore 64 had adequate memory and colour for this genre, and the SID chip could establish atmosphere better than anything competing with it. A 320 by 200 display with colour constrained per character cell produced the machine's distinctive look.
